India is one of the richest countries in hanidcrafts

India is one of the richest countries in terms of variety of handicrafts. This richness has sustained and flourished through many millennia due to ingenuity of craftspersons , patronage of chieftains , royalty and Government as well as various cross-cultural influences. But the most important contribution has been of those individuals , who have not also innovated , experimented and contributed on their own to the craft form , to produce priceless pieces of art and craft. These leading lights of handicraft sector [ Shilp Gurus ] are sources of inspiration for the younger craftspersons.

Office of the Development Commissioner [ Handicrafts ] , Ministry of Textiles , Govt of India has decided to honour 10 such “Shilp Gurus” every year commencing from 2002 which is the year of “Golden Jubilee of Handicrafts Resurgence in India”. By honouring these Shilp Gurus , Govt of India is recognizing their contribution towards the craft sector and the society as a whole.

On the occasion of “Golden Jubilee of Handicrafts Resurgence in India”. I salute the first 10 Shilp Gurus so selected and congratulate them. I also extend my heartiest felicitation to all those known and unknown persons connected with the crafts sector , who have stiven hard for the preservation of India’s rich heritage and development of this exciting and vital sector of our countryn terms of variety of handicrafts.
